Isobar maps depict isobars, which are lines drawn on a weather map that connect points of equal pressure. Isobars are determined from mean sea level pressure reports. Isobar maps are helpful in locating areas of high and low pressure, and are thus commonly used to show and predict weather conditions. Isobar maps are also very distinct, because a mapmaker must be very exact when drawing the lines; isobar maps also have rules that make them distinct from other maps. For example, atmospheric pressure must always be given in millibars, and isobar lines are never allowed to cross or touch.
The isobar map above depicts the current forecast analysis for Europe.
